State of South Carolina Governor's Proclamation
WHEREAS, primarily spread by the bite of infected ticks, Lyme disease affects people in every state of the nation; and
WHEREAS, ticks transmitting Lyme disease can be found in woods, parks and yards across the Palmetto State; and
WHEREAS, difficult to diagnose because it imitates other conditions, Lyme disease is most easily treated in its early stages and, left undiagnosed or untreated, can cause serious damage to various body organs and systems; and
WHEREAS, the 2009 observance of Lyme Disease Awareness Month provides an opportunity to learn more about the threat and prevention of tick-borne diseases.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mark Sanford, Governor of the Great State of South Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 2009 as
LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH
throughout the state and encourage all South Carolinians to recognize the importance of early detection and treatment of this disease.
