COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - May is Lyme disease awareness month, and one of South Carolina's top political figures is helping to bring attention to the issue.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer is speaking Thursday at a State House rally put on by the South Carolina Lyme Advocacy and Greenville Lyme Disease Association.

Dr. James Schaller, a clinician and researcher, is also expected to speak about Lyme disease.

SC Lyme Advocacy and Greenville Lyme are nonprofit groups dedicated to Lyme disease education, prevention, research and patient support.

Lyme disease is a multi-system bacterial infection carried by tiny deer ticks. Most cases are reported in the summer months.
